Dwarsrivier Valley Cricket League “tape ball” cricket is a type of cricket that has gained popularity in Pakistan and India. It also naturally grew very quickly in the Western Cape Boland when introduced in 2021. The Dwarsrivier Valley now has 8 teams with over 200 players registered in the league and more than 100 junior players (boys and girls) participating.
It was an honor for Staro to support the Pniel Knights team who made it to the final on 25th February. We are proud in what they have achieved and believe their goals and purpose of participating is of immense value to their community.
The Pniel Knights team slogan is “God’s blessing rests where there is unity”. They place emphasis on discipline, and to earn respect from fellow players and the community from behavior on and off the field. Grass Root cricket is a platform for where individuals can learn life lessons, essential social values, and leadership skills.
Cricket was almost dead in the Valley and with the beginning of Tape Ball Cricket, it again captured the imagination of the Valley and people came in their hundreds on Sundays to admire their favorite players. Almost every team has players who were previously negatively branded and lost to society. They have found a place within sport where they can experience positiveness, respect, support and purpose.
The highlight of the year (after the final) is the cup distribution “Gala night” where they honor the players for their sacrifice, best batsman, best bowler, best young player, and sportsman of the year.
Every year they select a “Dream 11” who represents the League against other leagues’ best.
Grassroots Cricket has life in the Dwarsrivier Valley and Staro wishes the Pniel Knights, and the other teams, success with the sport and work they do within their communities.
